Hi,

What is the regulation size chess board used for a rated game (USCF)?  Thanks!

MrEdCollins

The chess sets on this page are proably the most common type of sets used in tournaments, clubs, etc.

The size of the squares are 2.25 inches.  The king is 3.75 inches with 1.5 inch base diameter.

Be sure to see this page and this one.

I agree that 2.25 is the most common board size, but disagree about the king diameter.  Pretty sure 1.75" is more common.  I know there are folks with 1.875" diameter kings that use 2 3/8" inch boards as well.  I don't have a USCF rule book so I don't have anything official.  Nice links though, Mr. Ed.

MrEdCollins

You're correct.  I just grabbed a king from one of my tournament sets and grabbed my ruler and measured it myself.  This king does have 1.75 inch base.

I should have checked it myself before blindly copying and pasting.  Good work.

my old uscf special (the solid plastic one) is 1.5".

One dog to another, was that back in the days of wooden boards and iron men? Wink

plastic men and paper boards. uphill both ways, etc..

Its nice to be back in the US and playing on different chess sets that are usually nicer than the usual supplied sets for many of the tournies I played in while living in Portugal . I still dont like/understand the delay though and wish it would be abolished . Increments are far superior .

Thanks for all the comments!  It was exactly what I wanted to check.  Thanks for all the links and details Mr. Ed.  Exactly what I wanted to know.
