What is the point of the leagues/divisions anyways?

If you want a better physique and stronger body, you work out, if you want to be a good football player, you combine good training with lots of matches. Why you can't do the same with chess? Combine good training with lots of matches and get better. I think divisions are a good motivation to play and get better
The thing is, if you want to improve in chess you need to play slow time controls, you won't get better by playing just blitz. This leagues thing is just ridiculous, but that's the state of things, I opted out almost immediately, just worried about the youth though.

Yeah, but I do like the club, just for the forum. And the monthly tournament is fun even though the prizes aren't exactly great.

By the way, 10 minute games should also be considered as Blitz.
Yep. A 5/5 game takes more time generally.

You can have a half-hour workout or a one-hour workout. It depends on individual preference. You are your biggest fan and biggest critic. You know what works for you and what doesn't. I don't see a problem here, just guys here are overthinking.
If you want to improve your chess game, at least as the beginners that we are, you need to play slow time controls (45 min, 60 min etc.). You can make all the workout analogies that you want but there is simply no way around that.

You can advance in the league by being patient. A lot of ambitious people advance with scores over 1000, but you could get into legend with as low as 300, probably.

They basically want to prioritise us to play more chess games and ruin our eyesight just to get some points. But still I recommend that they are just for fun and entertainment.

Your all crazy.
I've been playing on chess.com for a long while.
I only play rapid 10 minute games.
I'm top of the legend division board.
When I was moving from elite I had atleast 2000 trophies within 2 days with casual play.
I have 2 children. and you all think chess is hard 😂

Fun as long they did last
THEY are happening mate Not gone.
Friend.... take a look at my current League... it's open season.

We are 10 in contention with 5 people constantly trading 1st spot...

Bragging rights Know people who are on the site for years and not past Elite division. Sometimes you get in tough divisions when you try to get to the last ones and get caught in a rut. Some people might envy your status as they would want to get there. If you don't : go with what you enjoy, it's super fun to challenge ourselves on here. The variant game section has it sown weirdly in-app leaderboards. I really wish they made a standard leaderboard page type for each formats not only for the player's league. That might diminish the impact of other players not seing what the pros are doing in there. (Chaturunga, bughouse, etc)

You are placed into a league when you play your first game of the week after the reset on Sunday. If you start playing right after the reset you’ll more than likely be placed in a league with members who are playing more often. If you wait until mid-week, say Wednesday however, the league you’re placed in is less likely to be of members that play everyday as it has been 3 days since the championship started. It is easier to advance this way and I achieved Legend with only 367 trophies last week.

no wonder last week and this week I end up in killer divisions
In my understanding i believe the chess.com devs want to encourage people to play chess more competitively more often. They also want to encourage folks to play longer games which provide deeper levels of strategy and discovery. They want us to push the boundaries of chess skill beyond the limits of our current playerbase. While this is happening theyre trying to foster a positive atmosphere where winning or losing does not matter as much as playing the game. You dont lose when you lose and you win when you win. Nobody is a loser when you play chess which is why you dont lose points.

You are right, I got into the legends past week with 368

HansSchmendrick,
In my only Stone division (Jun 4-Jun 11, 2023), somebody was at 800 within two days. People are crazy to get promoted even at the Stone stage.
paivankakkara,
Not only at Silver division, but Stone too. The same division that I mentioned above has 3 people past 1,000 & one past 1,200. Again, people are crazy to get promoted.
