Why Delay Next Round for Mathematically Irrelevant Games?

I suspect I'm not the first person to bring this up, but I would like to know why multi-round tournaments don't advance to the next round when the previous round has already been decided -- even if some games that don't affect the results are still going?

It seems like there are always one or two players who move slowly and hold everyone else up in games where the result has no effect on the pairings for the next round.  I'm not talking about when the issue is still it doubt -- but why should the section winners have to wait weeks or months while two slow players in one section duel it out for last place?

It's very annoying...  Frown

I agree that it would be nice for TDs to have an option to do that, but I'm not sure of how much work it would take to implement.

If the games are truly matematically irrelevant, maybe the tournament could essentially move on and then the games left behind would be played out as standard rated games.

Edited for making a mockery of english grammar.

Try reposting this in the HELP AND SUPPORT forum (can't hurt & might help).

You could also try asking the management here directly. I suspect that the tnmts are set up to "auto-play" under pre-determined guidelines, regardless of whether anyone finds them convenient or not. Someone has to program some software to run the tnmts or else someone has to manually manage them, so this may be a case of wanting someone else to do some work for you. However since you are a premium member your request isn't exactly unreasonable.

@oinquarki:  I suspect that implementing it would be pretty trivial.  Here's a screen that might work:

1.  At the end of any game in a group, determine a min and max score for each player in the group.

2.  For the N players with the highest minimum scores (where N = number to advance to next round), is the maximum score for the rest of the players less than the minimum score of those N players?  If yes, you have your advance group.

3.  If no, eliminate all players out of contention (i.e., score max less than score min of Nth lowest score min) and promote players already qualified (i.e., score min greater than the score max of the player with the Nth lowest score min) to the advance group.

4.  Determine the min and max tiebreaker for each player in contention but not promoted, and eliminate additional players using a similar algorithm.

5.  If more than N players are still in contention the issue hasn't been decided yet (unless all games are done, in which case all non-eliminated players advance), so the next round can't start.

6.  Once all groups are resolved, the next round can start without completing the irrelevant games.

@jason17:  I wouldn't suggest cancelling any irrelevant games -- but in effect they *ARE* nothing but ordinary rated games when they don't affect who goes on and/or how they're seeded in the next round.
