Withdrawal Question

I understand that if I withdraw from a tournament, I forfit any games in progress. What if I withdraw while waiting for the next round to start? Will I automatically forfit the games in the next round once it starts (forfiting to the players I would be matched with once that was determined)?

I joined a couple of tournaments that were "no vacation" because I thought they would move right along. It turns out that there are some players in a few games that are each taking the max time allowed for each move. I know they are within their rights but now I am nearing a planned vacation and if the next round starts while I'm gone, I will forfit on time.

Realizing this was poor planning on my part, I just wondering wether it is better to withdraw or just forfit on time if the next round starts before I return.

If you withdraw before the next round starts you will not forfeit any games in the next round. If you don't want to play in that tourney any longer it is best to withdraw once you finished all the games in the current round. You don't want to take a hit to your timeout ratio by allowing all your games to forfeit on time.

You also give the bubble guy an opportunity to play in the next round.

Like britesorb wrote, you should withdraw before the next round begins.  This way you won't be paired in the next rounds, avoiding unnecesarry timeouts for yourself.  And this is also considerate to the players you would have been paired with, who probably want a real game.

This advice also applies to OTB tournaments, where you should always tell the tournament director before skipping rounds or abandoning the tournament.

Thanks. I'll probably withdraw and try to plan better next time.
