• MISCELLANEOUS
Josh has posted an idea for a topic for today’s miscellaneous segment, “Chess anomalies and paradoxes” (very fancy). The word paradox simply means a statement or object that is seemingly contradictory or opposed to common sense and yet is perhaps true”. So today we will be be looking at popular chess positions that could be characterized as paradoxes.
WHITE TO MOVE
WHO WINS?
Its funny, if it was white’s turn, it would be a draw. If it was black’s turn white would win! So, in chess, it does matter whose turn it is.
.
STOP! TRY TO FIGURE THIS ONE OUT
I made this one up
In this paradox position, we see white to be checkmated in the next move. Whites has to react correctly. If he takes the queen, its still checkmate with the rook. If he promotes the pawn to a queen, it is checkmate in the next move too. The best move here is to promote to a knight. This is how it would turn out...
I want to thank and congratulate Josh for recommending a topic and surpassing his Puzzle Solving record.
That is it for today.
Thanks for reading.
Please comment any suggestions for next week’s article.
