Scotch Game: Classical Variation

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Bc5

In the Classical defense to the Scotch, Black develops the bishop to a good square and attacks the d4-knight.

Pros:

  • Black develops rapidly
  • In many lines, Black can attack f2 quickly by ...Qh4 or ...Qf6
  • White doesn't get a chance to play e4-e5, attacking a knight

Cons:

  • 5.Nxc6 usually results in doubled pawns for Black
  • The bishop can be exposed on d5
