This tournament remembers one of the most famous German philosophers, Arthur Schopenhauer. As a follower of Immanuel Kant, he construed whose Ding an sich as volition and constituted the metaphysical voluntarism. Based on a (Hindu-inspired) pessimistic world outlook, he deduced convincing ethics of commiseration and interpreted arts as expression of platonic ideas (of volition).
The tournament addresses particularly beginners of chess and philosophy, in order to encourage them to progress in both fields and to take a 'volition trophy'!
