Vocalist, musician and songwriter who was known internationally as the frontman of Queen, a British rock band that enjoyed overwhelming success during the 1970s and 1980s, taking over from legendary groups such as The Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

His stage name was Freddie Mercury, his real name was Farrokh Bulsara and he was born on September 5, 1946 on the island of Zanzibar (Tanzania), located on the east coast of Africa. His death was on November 24, 1991 as a result of AIDS.

CHILDHOOD

He was sent to India by his parents, Jer and Bomi Bulsara, to receive a good education. There he was cared for by his uncles and enrolled at St. Peter's School, a British educational institution located in Panchgani, some fifty miles from Bombay.

He was a great athlete and showed good qualities as a boxer and as a ping pong player.
As also in those years of childhood he began to awaken his love for music, he followed piano lessons and joined the school choir.

Very soon he set up his first musical group, The Hectics, an amateur rock and roll band that lavished their performances at all school parties and dances. At that time, his friends at school began to call him Freddie, a more or less faithful translation of Farrokh into English, and, in fact, the young man himself sometimes signed as Frederick.

LIFE IN LONDON

He had a very good friendship with Tim Staffell, another friend from Ealing Art School who was part of a group called Smile, in which Brian May and Roger Taylor played. Freddie became a follower and number one fan of the band.

In the summer of that same year, Freddie began singing in a Liverpool group called Ibex, which had moved to London seeking fame and success, but had a short and complicated existence.

Smile crossed his path again. His old friend Tim Staffell had decided to leave the line-up and Roger and Brian asked him to be the lead singer of the group.

QUEEN IS BORN

Freddie insisted on renaming the band and his was the idea of baptizing it Queen. At the same time, he changed his stage name and became Freddie Mercury from that moment on. After the innovations, the trio tested with various bassists until in 1971 a calm and collected character, John Deacon, joined the group.

The logo, another of Queen's hallmarks, was also a creation of the vocalist, who showed his talents as an imaginative designer. The image featured the band members' four zodiac signs (two lions for Roger and John, the group's two leos, the crab for Brian May's cancer sign, and the nymphs that identified Freddie's virgo sign) around a gigantic Q and, above all, the phoenix, which greeted the birth of the group from the ashes of other formations.

Almost a decade later, when he had already savored the honeys of success with Queen, Mercury made another of his dreams come true. He had always been passionate about dance and on October 7, 1979 he performed with the Royal Ballet, to perform and dance Bohemian Rhapsody and Crazy little thing called love.

THE SAD END

He died in his bed at seven o'clock on a cold afternoon on November 24, 1991 as a result of pneumonia that he could not overcome. At just forty-five years old, the great Freddie Mercury said goodbye to the life he had so intensely enjoyed and was buried in an intimate ceremony, according to the Mazdean rite.

INFANCIA

Tuvo muy buena amistad con Tim Staffell, otro amigo de la Ealing Art School que formaba parte de un grupo llamado Smile, en el que tocaban Brian May y Roger Taylor. Freddie se convirtió en seguidor y fan número uno de la banda.

En el verano de ese mismo año, Freddie empezó a cantar en un grupo de Liverpool llamado Ibex, que se había trasladado a Londres buscando fama y éxito, pero que tuvo una efímera y complicada existencia.

Smile volvió a cruzarse en su trayectoria. Su viejo amigo Tim Staffell había decidido abandonar la formación y Roger y Brian le pidieron que fuera el vocalista del grupo

Freddie insistió en renombrar a la banda y suya fue la idea de bautizarla como Queen. Al mismo tiempo, cambió su apellido artístico y se convirtió desde ese momento en Freddie Mercury. La imagen presentaba los cuatro signos del zodíaco de los miembros de la banda (dos leones por Roger y John, los dos leos del grupo, el cangrejo por el signo cáncer de Brian May y las ninfas que identificaban el signo virgo de Freddie) alrededor de una gigantesca Q y, sobre todo ello, el ave fénix, que saludaba el nacimiento del grupo de las cenizas de otras formaciones.

Casi una década después, cuando ya había paladeado las mieles del éxito con Queen, Mercury hizo realidad otro de sus sueños. Siempre había sido un apasionado de la danza y el 7 de octubre de 1979 actuó con el Royal Ballet, para interpretar y bailar Bohemian Rhapsody y Crazy little thing called love.

EL TRISTE FINAL

Murió en su cama a las siete de una fría tarde del día 24 de noviembre de 1991 como consecuencia de una neumonía que no pudo superar. Con tan sólo cuarenta y cinco años, el gran Freddie Mercury dijo adiós a la vida que tan intensamente había disfrutado y fue enterrado en una ceremonia íntima, conforme al rito mazdeísta.
