This is the second open tournament organized by Chess.com's Europe Group, which had only 50 participants. The number of European players had since enormously increased. This shows the strong popularity of Chess.com among us Europeans.
The Europe Open Championship 2009 will have 400 participants divided in 4 Catergories as foll:
Top Category: 2000 - No limit
Strong Category: 1800 - 1999
Intermediate Category: 1500 - 1799
Novice Category: 0 - 1499
Entrants are limited to 100 players in each category. The tournament is set to start on 14 March 2009 to allow players to wind down their games to accommodate the extra 4 games if they wish.
