Anthony John Miles, born on 23 April 1955, was the first English born OTB Grandmaster (narrowly pipping Raymond Keene) and inspired a generation of players that produced many more GMs and were able to compete with Russia for top nation. Tony Miles also inspired ordinary players like me. I remembeer watching him walking across the tarmac of Birmingham Airport with a huge College scarf blowing in the wind as the BBC reported his gaining the GM title. Miles also had run ins with authority, with team mates and with other chess professionals but to me always remained the peoples champion. Perhaps a better idea can be gained from Wikipedia or from Leonard Barden's obituary to him found at:www.guardian.co.uk/news/2001/nov/14/guardianobituaries
