- The Andromeda Galaxy (Messier 31 or M31) is the closest spiral galaxy to the Milky Way and the largest galaxy in the Local Group. It is approximately 2.5 million light-years from Earth and contains an estimated one trillion stars, making it larger than the Milky Way.
- Andromeda is on a collision course with the Milky Way and is expected to merge with it in about 4.5 billion years, forming a new galaxy. It is visible to the naked eye from Earth and appears as a faint, elongated patch in the night sky.
